GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM
The history of Solomon R. Guggenheim’s Museum is made by love and passion for knowledge. Any foundation, museums and collectors have been able to drive with such as passion and devotion, a way of training and culture through art like Guggenheim. The extraordinary figure of Peggy Guggenheim and her travels to the discovery knowledge through art, can be compared to the great journey led by Ferdinando Magellano, Cristoforo Colombo and Neil Armstrong ‐ The contribution of these figures have brought knowledge and culture to the present day and beyond. The new Guggenheim Museum in Helsinki redrawing the geography of the Foundation, bringing a new piece of knowledge in the city of Helsinki; knowledge’s journey goes to the north, as never been done before. The Guggenheim’s identity, his prestige, what is in our modern culture, combined with the tradition and culture of the North’s country and Finland, establish a trigger for new opportunities of learning and knowledge. The new museum has been designed as landscape within the city of Helsinki where, through an architectural space proposed as Cultural Dérive, offers to the city a public path as continuation of “urban walking” and opportunity to experience the museum without necessarily pay a ticket. The different access points are all merged into the Great Hall where ticket office, shops, cafes and a space for artworks offers a new public destination with many opportunities to meet, network and entertainment. The Great Hall hosts a series of ramps that lead to the various floors, where visitors makes their Cultural Dérive through exhibition as Experience4 more than a typical museum’s journey. The exhibition rooms offers to the visitor a panorama view overlooking the harbor and the city to ensuring the continuity between urban space and museum while two asymmetrical cores offers facilities and logistic services. The two middle volumes hosts the permanent collections and the main facilities while the workshop spaces, the multi-functional and the art storage are placed in the south volume; the idea is to reveal and show, through a series of common areas, the process of art: from the storage till to creation of an artwork. The proposal Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in Helsinki is an intensive space where arts, entertainment and knowledge lead new opportunity and innovation for Helsinki and for the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation.
